While maintaining an active studio practice, Thakkar serves as a full-time Professor at Savannah College of Art and Design, Atlanta. Using either organic or geometric shapes, students created three non-representational compositions demonstrating symmetric, asymmetric, and radial balance. The challenge was to pair one image from the built world with one from the natural world to generate contrast and evoke a third, implied meaning through their interaction. Students applied this idea by using only negative shapes to visually interpret three of the following subjects: clouds, jaws, sugar, ghost, salt, polar bear, flour, smoke, vanilla ice cream cone, and steam. The subjects themselves were not drawn; instead, students depicted only the surrounding negative space and, where appropriate, areas in shadow—using only black. As a design consideration, compositions could be cropped to show just a portion of the subject. Imagemaking is a fluid and exciting area of graphic design that comes out of practice and process: experimenting fearlessly, showing and sharing ideas, and giving and receiving knowledgeable and constructive input.It invites students to experiment with a variety of materials and techniques to create images for graphic design. Emphasis is placed on expanding visual vocabulary—both in making and articulating work—to foster thoughtful critique and discussion. Students will learn to generate, manipulate, and arrange imagery to form compelling compositions, culminating in the design and production of an image-based book. In the first half of the assignment, students explore image-making as a means of experimentation and discovery. Assignments encourage expressive, meditative, and design-driven pieces that serve to provoke, evoke, record, explain, or simply explore the potential of different media. In the second half, our focus shifts to intentional communication through images.
